Thanks very much to the 12 UTB volunteers who turned out in the rain today to (a) clear dogwood and blackthorn scrub regrowth; (b) 'pop' small trees from Upper Field with our new Tree Poppers, that lever plants out, roots and all; (c) plant Common and Dark Mullein; and (d) plant Hazel and Hawthorn into a gappy hedgeline.

We saw a Red Admiral fly past (it was dry once we got started), Blue Fleabane in full flower, a slime mould (probably Dog's Vomit) and various fungi; while the sheep continued their quiet work removing coarse grasses.

Our next task is on Sunday December 4th at 10.00.

The Branch now has two Duke of Burgundy species champions. Peter Ogden is looking after it in the Chilterns (duke-of-burgundy-bucks@upperthames-butteflies.org.uk) and Aga Bogucka is doing the same in West Berkshire (duke-of-burgundy-berks@upperthames-butteflies.org.uk).

The 10K Square Champions map has been updated. A number of squares are still un-adopted - please consider taking one on.

A huge thanks to our volunteers who turned out at Holtspur Bottom (near Beaconsfield) today to labour in the heat and help strengthen the fencing before the sheep return in mid-Sept. There is one more additional fencing task, next Saturday morning 3rd Sept at 10.00. We will strengthen another length of fencing and if we get enough volunteers, erect temporary fencing around the scrapes too; all help gratefully accepted.

Eight hardy souls turned up for the last conservation session of the 2021/2022 winter, and we burned all the material cut and cleared to the fence line by the entrance over the last two sessions, measured the damaged gate and posts to gauge what will make a sensible replacement, and cleared an ivy clad tree that had fallen across the public footpath.

Thanks entirely to our volunteers' efforts the site is in very good condition, ready for the coming spring and summer and the burgeoning wildlife that lives there.

The Chilterns Conservation Board, through its Tracking the Impact project, is looking for volunteers to take part in formal bird, butterfly and plant (and other wildlife) surveys in the Buckinghamshire Chilterns.

A wide range of opportunities are available, regardless of your experience or the time you have available. Training is available and support is on hand to help with survey methods, setting squares up and with data entry.

The project also runs a programme of species ID training to help you brush up on your ID skills. These are ideal if you have an interest but feel you need some help in developing your skills.

To register your interest, follow the link below and scroll down to find the questionnaire.

Butterfly Conservation's project to re-introduce the Chequered Skipper in England has been successful. The species is breeding in Fineshade Wood in Northamptonshire. Early June is the best time to plan a visit to see this lovely butterfly on the wing.

Thank you very much to the 16 of you joining us in the wonderful sunshine today at Holtspur Bottom, and for working so hard to maintain the flora at the reserve. We cleared some excessively large bramble patches that were encroaching on the higher path and continued work in the tall scrub on Triangle Bank, making scallops and rides through it. We burnt some of the scrub cut last year and erected signs that the police gave us after the damage to the reserve's most SW gate.

Our next task is at 10.00 on Sun 23rd Jan. Hope to see you there.
